We have to admit it, we have been mega lazy this month and the natural trails around us are so bogged down and slippy that they are no fun to ride. (that and it’s pheasant hunting season and the woods are full of drunken idiots with shotguns) We are also avoiding riding any of the more built up trails as they are cutting up and we don’t want to ruin them for everyone else.
Keeping our motivation up is hard and we never have been the kind to stick our bike on a turbo trainer (it’s all about being outside for McC…not the suffering).
With that in mind we have been hunting around for some organised events that we could take part in in January, to give us a little motivation to get out and ride more, and we think we have found a few.
So here is our pick of the top 3 mountain bike events (for novices) in the UK in January. If you know of any more or want to add some for your country then drop us a line and we will do our best to include them.
Expect tough, technical downhills and singletracks. The route will be using a mixture of open moorland trails, and single and double tracks in the Irfon Valley and Crychan Forest area. This is big country riding (big hills, remote, possible harsh weather) so come prepared for what ever Mid Wales may through at us in early January. The route will be designed around the weather, the route will be all weather.
As usual with our events the route will be very well marked, and we will also have some bail out options to cut the route short if you need to. The event will be a mass start at 10:30am from Llanwrtyd Wells. This year will be starting and finishing at the Drovers Rest. The Drovers Rest will be hot food and drinks all day.
Taking in the 3 separate sections of Powerline in small bite sized stages. This will make a great introduction to Enduro. 3 stages repeated twice with only one climb.
This is a great way to start Mtb competition be that DH or Enduro racing. Chopwell FUNduro is aimed at Enduro / Trailbikes on a fun trail centre trail. Basically whatever bike you take out for a Sunday blast is a cool bike for this event. All you need is your bike a full face helmet and and some end plugs in your bars.
Born of the original one and only New Year Mountain Bike XC Event – The Salisbury Plain Challenge, the SPAM Winter Challenge offers 3 distances over all weather tracks which can offer a post-Christmas challenge to the leisure rider or the experienced racer. course distances from 25km – 50km means there is something suitable for all. Fun and probably frost await the riders who brave the wintery weather for this one!
So what are you waiting for, pick one and start 2016 with some mud…sweat…..and don’t forget the beers. When it comes to burning off the turkey remember that Two Wheels are Better.
