We love a bargain here at TWB, and news has reached us from outdoor retailer Go Outdoors of its new Calibre Crag, a £299 hardtail with an aluminium frame and 26in wheels. The Crag is an update of the company’s previous Calibre Two Two model, and now offers a better specification and value for money.
For less than the cost of any decent smartphone, you get a well-equipped mountain biking, with a Suntour XCT suspension fork with 4in (100mm) of travel, Shimano components and disc brakes. A triple ring chainset provides loads of gears for getting up and down hills, and the Shimano EZ-Fire shifters provide easy shifting. The disc brakes are mechanically operated, using a brake cable (rather than hydraulics of more expensive mountain bikes) with 160mm disc rotors at both ends.
Okay, so 26in wheels might not be fashionable right now, with 27.5in and 29in wheels increasingly popular the more you spend, but a good quality 26in-wheeled mountain bike is still a very good thing. The TWB crew cut their teeth on 26in wheels and many of us still ride them regularly. Go Outdoors has fitted the wheels with 2.1in tyres.
