Baby, it’s cold outside… But you don’t need to worry (nor mumble the scant words you can remember of the festive duet in your head) if you have the right gear for the ride.
No matter which cycling discipline you favour, it’s vital you keep your core warm at this time of year. A good merino wool base layer like this one is a great place to start, but then you’d be wise to wear a soft shell on top.
These can offer varying degrees of protection from the cold, wind and wet, but the dhb Blok Prism Softshell Thermal Jacket does a great job on all three fronts.
The fleece lining is soft and snug, and the front and side panels boast dhb’s Windslam membrane, which keeps the wind chill out on a long downhill better than three copies of L’Equipe. The upper section of the back has a more breathable fabric, to help stop you getting too hot. If you’re heading uphill and do get a bit of a sweat on, then the full length zip is easy to adjust even when wearing chunky winter gloves. There’s also a soft chin guard at the top of the zip which, unlike cheaper jackets, does not irritate even in the wet.
The windproof and water resistant Windslam fabric extends right around the high neck, down the sleeves, and crucially across the rear pockets, helping to keep your stuff (and your backside) reasonably dry.
All the rear pockets are of a decent size (big enough to stash a full-on waterproof jacket in) and are easy to access on the go, whilst the right-hand pocket also has a fully waterproof middle layer and an external zipper section for your vitals.
The cuffs are very comfortably tight, without being too much so, so keep the wind out well, and the waistline has a silicone gripper hem which stops it riding up.
All told, this really is an excellent piece of kit, performing well both on and off the road. One of the best we’ve tried, in fact. Super comfortable in every area; technically delivering in the conditions it is designed for; and pretty damn snazzy looking to boot.
